Comments on Crossbow Seasons

I could play devils advocate on this because I was bowhunting before the compound was invented and I had my views on that inclusion as well, which wasnt a positive one. Some states (like west virginia) have seasons just for primitive bows, where compounds are not legal for use. I like this and I wouldnt care if it was in every state but then, there is a downside for this as well. Since most every state has no proficiency testing which is mandated to hunt (sad) the question of weapon type seems stupid to me. If states did mandate proficiency testing, there would be a huge support for crossbow inclusion. You can bet on that! The fact that a particular bow is more ethical in terms of outcome in the hands of the average citizen is what should dictate weapon inclusion but we (as a nation) dont work on whats best. We work on feelings and so, this is where we are.

States like MI have stated that APR are being done primarily to increase out of state license sales. States like PA have followed suit to retain hunter numbers. It is the goal of organizations to limit takes based on this fact. Some organizations work behind a veil of disguise, termed management. Such groups claim to want nothing more than age structure and herd structure but since this is impossible over the expanse of a state, it is a veil that deceives the viewer from recognizing the true intent of such organizations. This is due to the fact that public perception is one that resists trophy hunting. Since the public controls the vote, another route was chosen, to pacify the public and gain control of departments who can control the end result. The end result is never going to be achieved though. The belief that killing the buck who carries the best genetics will actually hurt the future deer herd, in terms of growing big bucks. Perfectly legal deer (under APR) can be as young as 1.5 years but bucks can also reach a full expanse of a life time and never exhibit the traits that are required to be harvested. Therefore... The best bucks are killed quickly and the bucks with inferior genes are allowed to bred for a lifetime, should they live a lifetime. In the U.S.A. today, there is no true management for big bucks and there will not be. This has been admitted across the board by all involved and at the highest levels within their concerns. So APR's are the answer for states who do not have time/resources to actually study this issue. What states have elected to do is to allow self proclaimed "experts" who are self appointed or have been appointed by their peers, to orchestrate a coup attempt against all but trophy hunters. States who have the largest bucks follow standards which disallow rifle seasons during the rut and also limit rifles to straight wall designs or shot guns. The best manag ement to increase a states buck population is to allow the bucks to have greater odds of survival. This is not what is done with APR. APR says kill any buck with 3/4 points on one side. Big difference.
